Coral & Brown Makeup Look

Everyone needs a bit of colour in their lives and this is one of my favourite makeup looks for adding a pop of colour so I thought I’d show you what I used to achieve this look.  I love corals and browns, the two colours go so well together and if you’re brunette and blue or green-eyed, this will be a lovely look for you.  You might think using coral coloured eyeshadow, blush and lipstick is a bit much but it actually works well and gives a glowing, healthy look.  I always get compliments when I wear this look!

Here’s the makeup I used to get this look

  • Bourjois Heathy Mix Foundation (my favourite foundation at the moment!)
  • MAC Blot Powder
  • MAC Casual Colour Creme in “Out for Fun”
  • NARS Blush in Orgasm
  • Catrice Made To Stay Creme Eyeshadow in a light gold colour #45 (for highlighting the inner corner of the eye)
  • Rimmel Scandaleyes Mascara in Black
  • Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner in Black
  • Inglot Lipliner in #71
  • Barry M Lipstick in #151

The eyeshadows I used were by MAC:

From the top left:

  • Ricepaper – highlight colour
  • Cork – in crease
  • Paradisco – coral colour on lid. It’s a really beautiful colour, this pic doesn’t do it justice at all!
  • Handwritten – Outer corner dark brown colour

I slightly winged the gel eyeliner but you don’t have to do that if you’re not too confident with it. You could always use a neutral lip colour too, that would look equally fab!

What do you think of this look?  Will you try it?  Let me know in the comments below 🙂

Glossybox

I recently subscribed to Glossybox and last week I received this lovely package in the post and I was dying to see what was inside!  This was my first box so the anticipation and excitement was high as I undid the pink bow around the beautiful packaging. I felt like all my birthdays had come at once! 😀

If you haven’t heard of Glossybox and you’re a bit of makeup and beauty lover, you’re in for a treat!  Basically you go to the Glossybox website (click on the box in the sidebar, on the right of this post) and subscribe for either a once off or for 3, 6 or 12 month subscriptions and every month, you’ll get sent this lovely little box with five beauty products for you to try.   The subscription options are all listed on the website but they start at £10 plus P&P. The sample sizes are fairly generous (enough for you to test them a good few times) and some are even full-sized products.  You can try all the products out and see if they suit you and then either buy the full size or buy other products from the same brand online using the link on the Glossybox website, usually with some kind of discount or special offer, great idea eh?!

This month I received:

  • Anatomicals “Don’t Just Clean It Woman, Scrub It!” body scrub – Full sized product
  • Yves Rocher Lipstick – Full sized product
  • Olay Regenerist 3 Point Treatment Cream – Sample sized product
  • Skinetica Anti-blemish skin cleanser – Sample sized product
  • Dr. Jart + Premium BB Beauty Balm – Sample sized product

I just think this is such a fantastic idea, the price of the lipstick and bodyscrub alone must have cost double the subscription cost so it’s great value.

Of them all, I really loved the body scrub which smelled really nice and did a great job sloughing off the remnants of my fake tan, and the lipstick which was lovely and moisturizing and the colour was one that I probably wouldn’t buy for myself so it was a nice way to try it out, and the Olay moisturizer seems to be good too.   I gave the Anti-blemish skin cleanser to my teenage step-son who is having a few issues with hormonal spots at the moment, so he was delighted with that!  The BB cream wasn’t really my colour so I’m trying to find a good home for that at the mo.

That’s the good thing, if there’s something that you won’t use yourself you can pass it onto someone you know who might get use from it.  Every month you get a good mix of makeup and beauty products so there’s bound to be something you love and it’s great if you like trying the latest products, but don’t want to be wasting your money on them if they don’t work for you.  When you sign up, you fill out an online questionnaire with details of your colouring, skin type, hair type/colour etc. so that the products you get are tailored to you specifically which is fab!  You can look on the website  to see what products have been given out in past Glossyboxes just to give you an idea.

I’m raging I missed out on all the previous ones but I’ve decided to subscribe to this all the time now as a little monthly present to myself and I’m really looking forward to my next one to see what’s in it!

Will you be trying the Glossybox?

Magnetic Nails – IsaDora & Barry M

I’m not one for faffing around with fancy nails and although there seems to be an abundance of nail art tutorials on youtube and pinterest etc., as much as I tell myself that I must try them sometime, I never get around to it.  The truth is, I want a nail polish that I can paint on easily while watching TV – maximum impact with minimum effort basically! Step forward the latest “Magnetic Nails” Nail Polishes!
First up is this one from IsaDora in “Iron Lady” a mid purple colour

It comes in a box with the nail polish and two different magnets that make both a star pattern and a wave pattern.  You just paint your nail and then hold the magnet over the nail for 15-20 seconds and ta da…magnetic nails 🙂

I used the wave pattern in the pic above.

The IsaDora one is great because, it dries quickly and comes with 2 patterns for something different.  It also comes in 6 shades but the colours are a bit samey, there are at least 4 varieties of purple alone so I’d like to see a better colour range.  Also it chipped after 2 days which was a bit of a pain but I do love the results.  These are €10 available in Debenhams stores.

Next up is the Barry M Magnetic Nail Effects

I LOVE these.  The polish looks great and lasts for days.  I applied this and 4 days later they were still chip free which is fantastic 🙂  The magnet for this is in the lid of the bottle and they come in 9 different shades in a wide range of colours.  The colour I used above is “Magnetic Red”.  They cost €6 in Boots and Superdrug and I’ll definitely be adding more colours to my collection!
Top Tip:  When you paint these on, make sure not to coat the nail too thinly or the polish will dry too quickly and the pattern won’t form when you hold the magnet over it. You have to use the magnet when the paint is still wet and these are very fast drying polishes.  Also some top coats seem to make the pattern disappear when you apply them so don’t use them just to be sure.

Have you tried these yet?  Got any other favourites brands?

Sneek Peek at MAC’s Holiday Collection 2012

Being a major makeup and beauty junkie, my heart skipped a few beats when I caught a sneek peek of MAC’s makeup collection for the holiday season 2012.  The theme on this one is glamour & sophistication with the most beautiful packaging and great makeup combinations that are perfect for nights out over the festive season.  Or, well…. for any time really, who needs an excuse?!

These are some of my favourites:

Making Pretty Collection: Gorgeous compacts, lipsticks, brushes and powder that are great for carrying around with you for quick touch ups.  The girliness of the pink faux leather packaging with rose gold metal trimming is just too much, I want it now!

Fabulousness Eyeshadow Pallets:  These elegant satin tufted compacts come in 3 different versions; Smoky, Neutral or Warm eyes with 5 different eyeshadows in one palette and a mini brush to apply them with. Fabulousness is right!

Fabulousness – All for Glamour Touch up Kit:  This includes a lipstick and a blot powder for quick touch-ups and comes in Medium, Medium Dark & Dark – another one on my wishlist!

Fabulousness – Eye Look bag: 3 different sets to choose from that come again, in the fantastic leopard print purse with 2 coordinating eyeshadows, eyeliner, mascara and a brush.

Fabulousness  – Lip Look bag: 3 different sets to choose from  that come in a fabulously cute leopard print purse with a coordinating lip pencil, lipstick and lipglosses. But, if you buy the eye look bag, wouldn’t it be pretty pointless not to get the lip look bag as well?!  Great justification for maxing out the old credit card. Yes, you can thank me when your bill comes! 😉

Perfectly Plush Brush Kit: 3 different sets in Mineralize, Essential and Advanced.  You get 4/5 mini brushes in the sets depending on which one you get.  These are must haves and MAC brings them out in every holiday collection and they just fly off the shelves but they really are fab and a great way to start with a good brush collection if the regular MAC ones are a bit out of your price range.  Oh AND they come in a leopard print pouch – what’s not to love?! 🙂

Guilty Passions Lipgloss & Pigment sets: 3 different sets of each M∙A∙C mini kits for eyes and lips, Guilty Passions Crushed Metallic Pigment kits feature four stackable jars of Pigment in rich molten metallic colour which are great for makeup artists.  They come in three tempting shade sets: Brilliantly Cool, Tenderly Warm and Sweetly Smoky.

Guilty Passions Lip Gloss kits illuminate lips in Lavish Rose, Cocktail Coral and Nicely Nude; each one includes Dazzleglass, Dazzleglass Creme and two Cremesheen Glass.

Seriously, how amazing are they?  And how much do you want all of them?  You can have a closer look with more detail on Temptalia’s blog so you can drool at their fabulousness and casually show to your other half while dropping major hints for these as a Christmas pressie!

They will be out in the States on 23rd October but the rest of us internationally will have to wait until November**.  Prices haven’t been released for those outside the States yet but I will update when they are.   These will make great presents & stocking fillers this Christmas, if you can bear to hand them over that is!

I reckon they are the nicest holiday collection that MAC have brought out yet, what do you think?

**UPDATE: If you live in Ireland, they will be out in MAC in Brown Thomas on Thursday 1st November!!!  I’ll be first in line 😉

How to Wear: Red Lipstick

Red lips will never go out of fashion and that is a fact.  Celebrities like Dita Von Teese, Gwen Stefani,  Imelda May and of course, the iconic Marilyn Monroe, have all made red lips their signature look and all have a sophisticated, timeless style because nothing says glamour and sophistication like true red lips!   You don’t have to be a celebrity to rock a red lip though, anyone can wear this and look amazing.  It’s all about finding the right shade for your skin tone.

Pale Skintones: Pale and Irish skin tones look better with blue-reds such as MAC’s Russian Red or Ruby Woo, both of which are staples in my makeup kit.  I used Russian Red on the model below for  photo shoot that I did for boudoir photographer Secret boudoir in Dublin a while ago.  It is a deep matte colour (although I did use some gloss also in the picture below) and really is my favourite shade of red lippy!

Sallow/Darker skintones:  My favourite colour for darker skintones is another MAC lipstick, Lady Danger.  It’s more of a coral/red colour which is also matte. I used Lady Danger on the model below and it gave a lovely dramatic look that you couldn’t ignore!

Tips for wearing red lipstick:

Red lips are HIGH maintenance, be prepared for constant top ups, teeth checking and lipstick marks on anyone you smooch up to, but for the impact it gives, I reckon it’s worth it 🙂

  • Before you apply it, make sure your lips are in top condition, scrub them with a wet toothbrush to get rid of dry skin, then a few minutes before you plan on applying your lippy, slather on lip balm or I always use Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream which is perfect for conditioning lips.
  • Line and fill in your lips with a matching shade of lipliner, this will act as a base colour and give you the perfect outline that you need with red lips.
  • Apply your lipstick, either straight from the tube or with a lipbrush for more control, then blot with tissue, lightly dust over some translucent powder and reapply lipstick, then blot again.  This will give your lipstick staying power and is a good tip for any colour lippy.
  • Clean up any uneven areas with concealer applied with a brush around the outline of the lipstick for a perfect line.
  • Make sure any spots or redness on your skin is concealed as the redness can be highlighted by red lipstick, your foundation base needs to be flawless for maximum impact.
  • Don’t use too much eyeshadow when wearing red lips, wearing just eyeliner looks fantastic either winged as in the first picture above or smudged and slightly smoked out as in the second picture.
  • Generally, blue toned lipsticks make teeth look whiter but orange toned lipsticks can highlight yellow teeth so be careful!

These lipsticks cost €17.50 from MAC stores but if you’re on a budget, you can use cheaper, pharmacy brands.  Catrice do some great ones as well as the Kate Moss range from Rimmel.

Will you trying Red lipstick any time soon?

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream – AMAZING!!!

I love foundation, I wear it every day and have done since I was 16!  But lately I’ve noticed that the heavier coverage foundations I usually go for really settle into the lines around my eyes that are suddenly making an appearance (much to my dismay!)  So I decided to try a couple of the new BB creams that are out at the moment.

If you have never heard of BB creams, they basically combine skincare & makeup in 1 simple step.  They are a step up from a tinted moisturiser.  Most makeup brands are doing them at the moment but this one from Maybelline is one of the better ones AND  it’s cheap too.  Sounds good to me so time to get testing!

The blurb from Maybeline:
8-in-1 Skin Perfector:
• Blurs imperfections
• Brightens
• Evens skin tone
• Smoothes
• Hydrates
• Enhances
• Protects with SPF 30
• 0% oils and heavy ingredients

Yes, I’d have to agree that it does all of the above and more.   I applied the fluid with my fingers in place of my usual moisturiser and surprisingly, my skin tone was evened out and it gave good coverage. And although after one application,  it felt fine I did apply a second layer and it looked even better.   The application was even and there were no lines as the colour adapted so well to my skin.  It also blended like a dream (hence the name maybe?!).

What I liked:

  • It combines your moisturiser, SPF & foundation all in one!  Perfect for quick makeup.
  • It’s great for all skin types, applies really well on dry skin and oily/combo skin and manages to stay matte but with a healthy sheen which I thought was not possible for my oily skin!
  • Fantastic, finish and colour, I chose light but it also comes in medium and dark.
  • For €11.50 this won’t break the bank and a little goes a long way.
  • It has an SPF of 30, which you should be wearing every day anyway but most foundations don’t go this high so this is perfect.  Especially good for wearing on holidays.
  • It’s so light weight that your skin feels & looks natural and is completely breathable rather than caked in heavy makeup.  It’s basically like your own skin only 10 x better!

What I didn’t like:

  • The packaging – if  I had not heard great things about this which made me want to try it out, I probably would have passed it by on the stand.  The packaging seems aimed towards teenagers/young girls,  it just screams pink and fluffy!
  • The colour looks a bit orange and scary when it first comes out of the tube but when you apply it, it doesn’t look like that on your skin at all which is just as well really!
  • If you are looking for this to cover redness (as with roscea) or pigmentation of the skin, forget it.  It works best if you have relatively good skin with no major issues.

I did need a bit extra with this so I also used a concealer (Bourjois Healthy Mix concealer) under my eyes and on any minor red areas on my face such as broken capillaries small spots etc.  and that gave me a little extra coverage where I needed it.  This is a much better way of applying your makeup anyway rather than masking your whole face in layers upon layers of makeup in order to cover a few blemishes.

This would be great for:

Teenagers – you can apply this going to school and it will last the day without going patchy or needing more makeup applied, although if you feel you need a little more later in the day, you can do that without it affecting the makeup that’s already there (once you haven’t used too much powder).  If you need to cover spots, only cover the areas that need it as above.

More mature skin – yes even more mature ladies can use this and again, just conceal in the areas you need it also and it’ll give you a fresh faced dewy look which is great for mature skin and makes you look younger (now c’mon, who doesn’t want that?!)

So it’s safe to say I’m a BB cream convert and will actually be replacing my foundation to use this for work every day.  I love how easy it is to just slap it on (it works better applied with fingers than a brush actually) and I love the result it gives to your skin it’s just amazing stuff so big thumbs up from me on this one.

Have you tried BB creams yet?  Which ones do you like?

Get Leona Lewis’ X Factor Look

If you were watching the X Factor last Sunday night, you might have seen Leona Lewis perform looking absolutely stunning as usual but the thing that really caught my eye was her beautiful makeup, particularly her gorgeous sparkly eye makeup.

I managed to find out what her makeup artist used so I drafted in my daughters best friend Laura to create the exact look below.  And when you won’t believe what product Leona’s makeup artist used to get this glittery eye makeup!

The pictures above don’t really do justice to how sparkly and beautiful this eyemakeup really is but if you want to achieve the same look it’s sooo unbelievably easy see below for what I used:

Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation in No.51

MAC Kid & Cork Eyeshadows

Maybeline black Gel Eyeliner

Rimmel Volumeyes Mascara

Molton Brown Blush in Nutmeg

MAC Lipstick in Angel
And obviously you’ll be wondering what was used for the sparkles well, I’m reliably informed that the actual product used on Leona was none other than a €3.60 glittery eyeliner from Collection 2000 in a shade called Hustle below:

This was used all over Leona’s lid and produced that high shine sparkle that lit up her eyes.  I know.  An eyeliner for less than €4 from Superdrug gave her that amazing look?!  I was flabbergasted too!!  So it just goes to show you that you don’t need expensive makeup to create high impact glamour.  This would be perfect for a debs or a night out, especially coming up to the party season!  These liners come in a number of different shades and can be bought in Boots, Superdrug or most pharmacies where Collection 2000 is sold 🙂

Would you wear a look like this?
