Cocoa Brown Tan by Marissa Carter = Best Fake Tan EVER!

I don’t know about you but I love a good fake tan.  It just makes me feel really healthy looking and also helps me appear a little bit slimmer which is a great bonus!  With the weather being so amazing lately I decided to try the latest self tanner from Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter, which has been getting  rave reviews on blogs and beauty sites as well as receiving beauty awards left, right and centre, and it’s easy to see why once you’ve used it.

Cocoa Brown self tan has two different products:

One Hour Tan

This mousse formula does exactly what it says on the tin, you slap it on and in 1 hour you have developed a beautiful golden glow.  It has a brown guide colour and when the tan develops you can wash the guide colour off :

1 hour after application – for a light tan

2 hours after application – for a medium tan

3 hours after application – for a darker tan

The tan will then last up to 5 days and it fades extremely well and isn’t at all patchy . It gives a lovely deep, even colour and I found the guide colour on this to be great and didn’t bother washing it off, even though you’re supposed to.

Night and Day Tan

Also a mousse formula you can use this on a night out if you haven’t had time to apply fake tan the night before or put it on when you get out of bed to last for the day.  The guide colour is the best I’ve seen, it’s a really natural beautiful colour by itself and doesn’t leave you looking like you’ve been wrestling in a mud bath!    You can wash the guide colour off the next day and still be left with a light glowing tan.

Both products are perfect for girls on the go who don’t have time to wait overnight for their tan to develop.  This is hands down, the best tanning brand I’ve ever used and I love the results it gives so it gets a huge thumbs up from me and I’d highly advise you to try them out.  At €7.99 they are an absolute bargain also.

As with all fake tans, there is some skin preparation required in the days before you apply it, so here are some tips:

  • Exfoliate your skin well and pay particular attention to anywhere your skin folds or creases as well as rough areas such as knees and elbows
  • Shave the day before you want to apply your tan as if you do so just before application, it can result in angry red bumps, particularly on your legs and underarms which does not look good!
  • Moisturise the day before you apply tan but leave your skin free from any products or deodorants etc. on the day you want to apply your tan or they will give a patchy result.
  • Make sure you have exfoliated away any old tan before you reapply new tan
  • For an even darker result, you can apply the tan 2 days in a row

Top Tip:   Some people use a tanning mitt to apply their fake tan but I find using latex gloves much better.  They give you greater control of where the colour is going, especially on hands/fingers and feet  and you don’t waste as much product.

Doing your hands is easy, just take one glove off, apply tan to the glove free hand, wait for that to dry then pop a glove on it and do the same to the other hand.

Another thing I love about both products is the smell!  It’s not your typical chemical fake tan smell, it actually smells really nice and my husband hasn’t complained about the smell once when I’ve got into bed so it must be good as his smellers are really sensitive!

Cocoa Brown tan is available in Hickeys & McCabes Pharmacies as well as Penneys, Superquinn and now Boots.  If you’re outside Ireland, you can also get it on the  Feel Unique website so pick one up for yourself next time you see it and I promise you won’t regret it 🙂

Makeup Must-Haves For Summer Holidays

If you love makeup and are going on your summer holidays abroad, it can be a nightmare trying to pack a makeup bag with items that will cover you from day to night. I always try to downsize but usually end up bringing my whole kit!  But you can pick and choose a few key items that will cover you for your whole holiday and take you from day to night.  These are my favourite picks for makeup you can easily fit into your case and items you must have, that will double up for other uses also.

BB Cream

I know I keep banging on about this, but during the summer it really is great stuff for just putting on to even out your skintone as well as protect your skin.  When you’re already overheated, you don’t want to be clogging your skin with heavy makeup and risking it going patchy when it sweats off you, which is why BB cream is perfect.  It doubles up as your facial sunscreen also.

Maybeline Dream Fresh BB CreamMAC Face & Body

I love this as a light foundation on holidays and it stays put as it’s sweat & waterproof.  The bottles are quite large but you can easily decant them into a smaller bottle or jar.

I also love to use this foundation on my legs to even out the colour and skin-tone.  If you get a dark one it’s perfect and looks like real skin rather than using a bronzing cream which has shimmer and is obviously fake.  Plus, since it’s waterproof, it won’t run or streak!

Benefit Makeup Kits

I love these little kits from Benefit that usually include a number of miniture makeup products such as eyeshadow, mascara, foundation, blush, bronzer and lipgloss.  If you get a couple of these you are sorted for everything you need from day to night.  My faves are:

Cabana Glama

Cabana glama kitThis contains a light foundation, bronzing powder, 3 eyeshadows, a tint for your lips & cheeks and 2 applicators.  So that’s basically everthing you need!

 The Bronze of Champions

Bronze of Champs

If you love your bronzing products, this contains an illuminator as well as a bronzing cream and powder, a cream and powder eyeshadow and a mascara.  So perfect for wearing with a tan.

Both kits above start at €36 so they’re well worth it.

Build your own Kits

Inglot’s Freedom system is great as you can pick what size palette you want and add in your own eyeshadows or lipsticks and have a completely custom palette with all the colours you want which is ideal!

Prices vary depending on size but all palettes are stackable and mean you can bring exactly what you’ll use from eyeshadows, to lipsticks, concealers and brow gels and save on space in your makeup bag.  Love it!

See through Makeup Bags

Bags for Makeup

These are a must have for carrying your makeup and you can can buy them at Dunnes, Penneys (Primark) or M&S for a reasonable price.  They usually come in muliple packs and as long as you don’t have any liquids over 50mls you can carry them in your hand luggage.  I always do this as I’m so paranoid about losing my case or having something break when I travel!  You can just take them out of your case for anyone to inspect and they can see everything that’s in there so they’re just the job!

Custom Lipstick Palette

In my previous post I showed you how to make your own custom palette that would be just perfect for holidays so you can try that too!

Are you off anywhere nice this year and will you be trying any of the above?  Or if you have any good tips for holiday makeup I’d love to hear them in the comments below!

MAC New Clear Palettes

MAC have a new Palette which is clear so if you are a lover of MAC’s eyeshadows and collect quite a few of them I would recommend you check this out.

MAC Clear Palette

I popped my two new Green colours in to show you how they sit (more about them as well as a Green eyemakeup tutorial in another post!), you can put 24 eyeshadows in like this or if you use the insert that comes separately you can fit 15 shadows as below.  If you use it without the insert you can put a few blushers in along with your eyeshadows also, as MAC do blusher pans too, this is so handy for when you are travelling and only want to bring certain colours with you and have everything to hand in the one palette.

Clear Palette with Insert
Clear Palette with Insert

The good thing about these is that you can also put other eyeshadows in with the MAC ones such as the Inglot eyeshadow pans which are also magnetic so you can have eyeshadows from different brands in the one palette which is only great!  These palettes cost €18 from MAC and if you want to buy the insert that’s another €8 so €26 for both.  There are other similar palettes you can use also.

Z Palette
Z Palette

The Z Palette is another good one that you can use for any eyeshadow and blusher pans, once you prise your eyeshadow/blusher pans from their original casing you can stick on the little magnatised stickers that come with the Z Palette to the back and they instantly stay in the palette!  You can buy these online from  and they are approximately €20/€22 with P&P as it’s a UK site.

Do you have a big eyeshadow collection and will you be getting these?

I recently subscribed to Glossybox and last week I received this lovely package in the post and I was dying to see what was inside!  This was my first box so the anticipation and excitement was high as I undid the pink bow around the beautiful packaging. I felt like all my birthdays had come at once! 😀

If you haven’t heard of Glossybox and you’re a bit of makeup and beauty lover, you’re in for a treat!  Basically you go to the Glossybox website (click on the box in the sidebar, on the right of this post) and subscribe for either a once off or for 3, 6 or 12 month subscriptions and every month, you’ll get sent this lovely little box with five beauty products for you to try.   The subscription options are all listed on the website but they start at £10 plus P&P. The sample sizes are fairly generous (enough for you to test them a good few times) and some are even full-sized products.  You can try all the products out and see if they suit you and then either buy the full size or buy other products from the same brand online using the link on the Glossybox website, usually with some kind of discount or special offer, great idea eh?!

This month I received:

  • Anatomicals “Don’t Just Clean It Woman, Scrub It!” body scrub – Full sized product
  • Yves Rocher Lipstick – Full sized product
  • Olay Regenerist 3 Point Treatment Cream – Sample sized product
  • Skinetica Anti-blemish skin cleanser – Sample sized product
  • Dr. Jart + Premium BB Beauty Balm – Sample sized product

I just think this is such a fantastic idea, the price of the lipstick and bodyscrub alone must have cost double the subscription cost so it’s great value.

Of them all, I really loved the body scrub which smelled really nice and did a great job sloughing off the remnants of my fake tan, and the lipstick which was lovely and moisturizing and the colour was one that I probably wouldn’t buy for myself so it was a nice way to try it out, and the Olay moisturizer seems to be good too.   I gave the Anti-blemish skin cleanser to my teenage step-son who is having a few issues with hormonal spots at the moment, so he was delighted with that!  The BB cream wasn’t really my colour so I’m trying to find a good home for that at the mo.

That’s the good thing, if there’s something that you won’t use yourself you can pass it onto someone you know who might get use from it.  Every month you get a good mix of makeup and beauty products so there’s bound to be something you love and it’s great if you like trying the latest products, but don’t want to be wasting your money on them if they don’t work for you.  When you sign up, you fill out an online questionnaire with details of your colouring, skin type, hair type/colour etc. so that the products you get are tailored to you specifically which is fab!  You can look on the website  to see what products have been given out in past Glossyboxes just to give you an idea.

I’m raging I missed out on all the previous ones but I’ve decided to subscribe to this all the time now as a little monthly present to myself and I’m really looking forward to my next one to see what’s in it!

Will you be trying the Glossybox?

Sneek Peek at MAC’s Holiday Collection 2012

Being a major makeup and beauty junkie, my heart skipped a few beats when I caught a sneek peek of MAC’s makeup collection for the holiday season 2012.  The theme on this one is glamour & sophistication with the most beautiful packaging and great makeup combinations that are perfect for nights out over the festive season.  Or, well…. for any time really, who needs an excuse?!

These are some of my favourites:

Making Pretty Collection: Gorgeous compacts, lipsticks, brushes and powder that are great for carrying around with you for quick touch ups.  The girliness of the pink faux leather packaging with rose gold metal trimming is just too much, I want it now!

Fabulousness Eyeshadow Pallets:  These elegant satin tufted compacts come in 3 different versions; Smoky, Neutral or Warm eyes with 5 different eyeshadows in one palette and a mini brush to apply them with. Fabulousness is right!

Fabulousness – All for Glamour Touch up Kit:  This includes a lipstick and a blot powder for quick touch-ups and comes in Medium, Medium Dark & Dark – another one on my wishlist!

Fabulousness – Eye Look bag: 3 different sets to choose from that come again, in the fantastic leopard print purse with 2 coordinating eyeshadows, eyeliner, mascara and a brush.

Fabulousness  – Lip Look bag: 3 different sets to choose from  that come in a fabulously cute leopard print purse with a coordinating lip pencil, lipstick and lipglosses. But, if you buy the eye look bag, wouldn’t it be pretty pointless not to get the lip look bag as well?!  Great justification for maxing out the old credit card. Yes, you can thank me when your bill comes! 😉

Perfectly Plush Brush Kit: 3 different sets in Mineralize, Essential and Advanced.  You get 4/5 mini brushes in the sets depending on which one you get.  These are must haves and MAC brings them out in every holiday collection and they just fly off the shelves but they really are fab and a great way to start with a good brush collection if the regular MAC ones are a bit out of your price range.  Oh AND they come in a leopard print pouch – what’s not to love?! 🙂

Guilty Passions Lipgloss & Pigment sets: 3 different sets of each M∙A∙C mini kits for eyes and lips, Guilty Passions Crushed Metallic Pigment kits feature four stackable jars of Pigment in rich molten metallic colour which are great for makeup artists.  They come in three tempting shade sets: Brilliantly Cool, Tenderly Warm and Sweetly Smoky.

Guilty Passions Lip Gloss kits illuminate lips in Lavish Rose, Cocktail Coral and Nicely Nude; each one includes Dazzleglass, Dazzleglass Creme and two Cremesheen Glass.

Seriously, how amazing are they?  And how much do you want all of them?  You can have a closer look with more detail on Temptalia’s blog so you can drool at their fabulousness and casually show to your other half while dropping major hints for these as a Christmas pressie!

They will be out in the States on 23rd October but the rest of us internationally will have to wait until November**.  Prices haven’t been released for those outside the States yet but I will update when they are.   These will make great presents & stocking fillers this Christmas, if you can bear to hand them over that is!

I reckon they are the nicest holiday collection that MAC have brought out yet, what do you think?

**UPDATE: If you live in Ireland, they will be out in MAC in Brown Thomas on Thursday 1st November!!!  I’ll be first in line 😉

Summer Makeup – MAC Casual Colour Lip & Cheek Colour

Looking out the window you would never know it but we’re smack bang in the middle of summer!  This means that we should be looking all summery and colourful but seeing as that is not always possible the least you can do is add a little pop of colour in your makeup.  If you find yourself sticking to the same brown eyeshadows and pink lipstick/blush you could really change your whole look by trying a nice colourful eyeshadow to make your eye colour pop, a beautiful blush to make your complexion glow or a vibrant shade of lipstick that you’ve never used before.  You will be surprised at the difference it makes!

I was in MAC at the weekend having a little makeup splurge and I picked up one of their new Casual Colour Lip & Cheek Colour pots in “Out for Fun” which is a lovely creamy textured coral orange colour that, as the name suggests, can be used as a crème blush and a lipstick which is always a bonus.  I wanted to steer away from my usual pinks and nudes and try something new and I’m glad I did because since I’ve worn it I’ve received lots of compliments.  Even my middle aged fuddy duddy boss who never normally notices anything different about me (he didn’t bat an eyelid when I changed my hair colour from blonde to brown!?) told me I was looking well this morning when I went into work so it must be good stuff!

You can get Casual Colour pots from MAC at €21.50 which seems a bit pricey but you are getting two products for the price of one.  The quality is great and the product is long lasting so I really think it’s worth splashing out.  But you’ll need to be quick as these are limited edition and they had sold out of a lot of the more popular colours when I was in there at the weekend.  However I have a feeling that MAC may add these to their permanent line or bring them out again since they were so popular.

They come in a range of 8 colours and used as a blush they are easily blendable and radiant looking and on the lips, the colour is highly pigmented and takes the guesswork out of matching your lip and cheek colour.
